Excerpt

The street was empty, a cold wind blasting down the sidewalk, dark clouds swirling overhead and threatening snow, scaring the pedestrians back into their safe and warm homes. I trudged on, keeping my coat wrapped tight against my body, bracing against the gusts of wind. I had nowhere to go. The world was as cruel and cold as the weather.

Most of the stores were closed, the buildings all unfamiliar to me. I just had to continue on, find somewhere safe to rest. Small flurries swirled past me. Around me the wind seemed to whisper, voices echoing.

In the distance stood a figure. I squinted, but couldn’t make him out, so I just continued walking. He didn’t move, wasn’t stirred by the cold or the storm.

After a few more steps I looked up again, trying to place him. He held out his arms and my heart stopped. I started running, my breath puffing out in little white clouds, feet echoing against the pavement. The distance between us closed and I was in Marcus’s arms, warm and safe.

“Where were you?” he asked, smoothing down my hair.

“I was looking for you everywhere. Everything has gone all wrong. Our lives are ruined.”

“Don’t say that. We’re fine as long as we’re together.”

I looked up at him, his eyes shining, a wide smile on his face. He was right: I felt fine in his arms. Marcus kissed me, my body immediately responding to his touch. All of the worries melted away. This was all I needed, everything was fine.

There was a loud beeping and a thump. I opened my eyes, early morning light streaming between the plastic blinds. The garbage men outside yelled at each other as another dumpster slammed into the sidewalk. I rolled over onto my side, trying to close my eyes and reclaim the perfect dream I was having, but it was too late. Bitter reality already seeped in, reminding me of the heaviness and uncertainty I tried to escape in my sleep.

Excerpt

“Your assistant was gone,” I said, closing the door behind me.

Marcus was leaning over his desk, papers spread out in front of him. “I sent her on an errand,” he said, sitting back in his chair. He had dark circles under his eyes.

“What’s going on? Did something happen?”

“What?” He raised an eyebrow as he stacked his papers and put them in his drawer.

“You summoned me at work—this breaks, like, five rules.”

“Oh!” He laughed and pushed his chair back from his desk, holding out his hands. “No, no. I just missed you.”

I walked over, letting him take my hands. His palms were dry and rough. He seemed disheveled.

“Do you want to talk?” I asked. Besides our secret hotel trysts, we didn’t see each other much anymore.

“Not quite.” He brought my hand to his mouth and kissed it, looking up at me with a blatant desire in his eyes.

“Marcus!” I hissed, feeling my cheeks blushing even though we were the only ones in the room. “We can’t do that.”

“Why not? This is the last chance we’ll get to do it here in this office. I’d hate to leave MedTech with that kind of regret, wouldn’t you?”

I couldn’t help smiling. The idea was totally hot.

“What if someone catches us?” I couldn’t help whispering.

Marcus pulled me down onto his lap, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing me.

I pushed away, giggling a little. “Marcus, I’m serious.”

“So am I,” he said, sliding his hand under my skirt, massaging my thigh.

“What if Tracy comes back?”

“She won’t.” He kissed me again, as if that was his final argument and he’d won.

His advances were hard to resist and I’d missed him the last few days, laying alone in my bed at night, wishing his warm body was there next to me.

He was certainly close to me now, the fabric of my tights the only thing separating us.

The Other Woman – Making the Billionaire’s Baby 4

Synopsis

This is part four of the “Making the Billionaire’s Baby” series.

As the weight of her decision to make a secret baby with billionaire Marcus becomes apparent, Shannon realizes she’s made a huge mistake. But now that she’s signed the contract to let the billionaire’s wife adopt her baby, Shannon has no other choice but to go along with their original plan and hide her feelings for Marcus. When an old flame comes back into her life, Shannon makes a decision that could put everything at risk.

Excerpt

When the door closed behind them I let out a long breath. What the hell had I gotten myself into? Watching them together like this—how could I give them my child and let them raise it? Sure I didn’t really want a baby right now in my life, but what the hell was I thinking when I signed that contract? Was this really worth all of that money—making a baby just to sell it?

I pushed back my chair and just as I stood up, the door opened again. I expected Tracy was coming to herd me back to my desk, but Marcus rushed into the room, his arms around me before I could react. When his lips met mine, I melted into his embrace, all of the weirdness of the meeting completely gone.

Our lips parted but his hands roamed my body.

“I can’t believe how much you riled her up,” he hissed, his breath hot against my ear. “She was full-on panicking.”

He kissed me again, our bodies pressed together, mine awaking with wanting. Was he going to take me right here, in this conference room? It was such a bad idea, but I wanted it more than anything.

Finally he pulled away, stepping back so only the palatable desire in the air still linked us.

“She thinks it’s my fault. I’m going to hear it tonight. Don’t do that again. You have to play nice.”

I nodded, hoping this scolding was just more foreplay.

“Call her this afternoon. Set up the meeting with the lawyer for the contract. Tell her you were being hard on her to be sure we were the right couple. Invite her to your next doctor appointment.”

I nodded again, trying not to visibly pant, but my heart was pounding in my chest and I just wanted to grab him, to be consumed by him.

“All right.” He turned towards the door, but I grabbed his hand, tugging him toward me.

He looked down briefly, then gently slid out of my grasp. “We have to play by the rules. This is a dangerous game and everything is at stake. We can’t get distracted.”

My hand dropped to my side. Marcus looked up at me, waiting to see that I understood.

I didn’t want to agree. I didn’t want to play this game anymore. What had I gotten myself into? But I couldn’t back out. Even if it all was starting to feel like a giant mistake.

“Okay,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Marcus nodded and left the room without another word.
